TMA PBS Vehicle Mass Monitoring Schemes

About the Scheme:

Both Transport for New South Wales (TfNSW), and the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR), Queensland, offer a scheme which permits larger and heavier Performance Based Standards (PBS) combinations greater network access. This initiative, designed to enhance transportation efficiency, requires transport operators to meet the TMA and Smart On-Board Mass technology requirements.

Benefits of the Scheme:

Operate larger and heavier combinations with greater network access.

Remove the need for driver self-declarations if required by another scheme such as the TMA Higher Mass Limits Schemes.

Regulatory Telematics Requirements:

TMA + Smart OBM is required for all eligible vehicles of this scheme.

Queensland Class 2 Performance Based Standards A-Double (Toowoomba to Port of Brisbane) Authorisation Notice

Vehicles operating under this notice must be enrolled in the TMA PBS Vehicle Mass Monitoring Scheme (QLD).

National Class 2 Performance Based Standards (High Productivity) Authorisation Notice

In NSW, some vehicles may require TMA + Smart OBM under this scheme based on wither the Network Map has a specific access condition. Commonly these include:

  • Traveling down Mt Ousley in Wollongong at over 68.5t GCM (which also requires enrolment in the TMA Hill Descent Monitoring Scheme)
  • Traveling Southbound over the Hexham Bridge in Newcastle as a PBS combination with a performance of Level 2B or greater.

National Class 2 Performance Based Standards Vehicle (Tier 1) Authorisation Notice 2021

In NSW, some vehicles may require TMA + Smart OBM under this scheme based on wither the Network Map has a specific access condition. Commonly these include:

  • Traveling Southbound over the Hexham Bridge in Newcastle as a PBS combination with a performance of Level 2B or greater.

QLD & NSW PBS Permits

In both NSW and QLD, at any mass limit (GML, CML, or HML), a PBS permit may include TMA + Smart OBM as access condition based on the specific access requested.
